Boys Over Flowers (2009): A Media Analysis of Structure of Gender and Class Under South Korean Culture

Project Overview

This project was a part of Gender, Class, and Queering the Media course during my academic year at Bachelor of Arts in Language and Culture, Chulalongkorn University. It aims to focus on a media analysis regarding how gender and class are reflected and portrayed in the mass media which such ideology are constantly reproduced and represented to create norms in a particular society.

I chose one of the most well-known Korean series ‘Boys Over Flowers (2009)’ for the analysis. The research focuses on an interpretation of how the series reproduces a discourse of gender imbalances by putting an emphasis on the contrasting gender binary through the media portrayal of Geum Jan-di and Joon-pyo along with his male privileged group members of ‘F4’. The theories discussed cover hegemonic masculinity, inferior femininity, misogyny and internalised sexism, soft masculinity in South Korean context, social class and intersectionality, gender role reversal, assimilation of the rich into the poor’s lifestyle, and femininity under male perspectives.

The objective of this assignment was to analyse the narrative of the series in the context of production. The major discussion of the research is the narrative elements of the series of my choice ‘Start-Up (2020)’, divided into sections including; production context; the series plot; main characters’ functions, motivations, individual arcs; story arcs; and the storyworld. One episode of the series is also selected to discuss narrative elements within the episode in detail, followed by a discussion of the narrative elements that make the show original and intriguing to the audience.
